The dynamics of cultural remembrance: an intermedial perspective (synthesis)

This project integrates the insights gained from the sub-projects and from the workshops so as to provide a revised theoretical understanding of the interaction between media, social frames, and the cultural life of memory sites. It also brings to task the results of extensive empirical research on the work of Walter Scott, whose historical novels represented a new medium at the time of production, whose work was ‘translated’ into many different cultural forms and into material cultural , and who used to be an international object of commemorationthough his importance has since then largely been eroded. (This project was started in 2001 and is due for completion in 2009.) Since the various subprojects in The Dynamics of Cultural Memory cover different periods since the 1830s, the synthesis will also be able to provide some insight into long-term changes in memorial practices as these are linked to technological innovations (the rise of new media) and social changes (notably commercialisation and the growth of tourism).
